Stroke of Midnight is an anthology featuring several short stories, including the story by L.A. Banks: Make it Last Forever. The story takes place in Oklahoma, 1979 when Jack Rider first encounters his soul mate, Tara. The story spans several days as they meet and fall in love.
Synopsis[edit | edit source]
Due to Tara having been previously seduced and bitten by a vampire, she has to reach New Mexico where her grandmother is said to reside. Her grandmother is said to be able to cure people who have been bitten by vampires, so long as they haven't died. Tara's grandmother isn't in New Mexico where she is said to have resided, having since moved to Arizona.
Rider swears vengeance upon the undead and due to the lessons taught by Tara, becomes a guardian. During his journey, Rider encounters a young Jose Ciponte. Tara's grandmother informs Rider that Tara's destiny was to teach Rider what he needed to know so that he could become a guardian and protect the Great Huntress until she was ready.
The epilogue takes places in 2003, Rider goes to meet Tara for their annual meeting on the anniversary of the day they met. Rider is hurt that Tara hadn't shown up the year before. She claims there's a new master in the region and that she was trying to lay low.
Alternate version: Minion[edit | edit source]
In Minion, Rider claims that Tara was the woman who used to ride on the back of his Harley and that he had to stake her in Arizona. He mentions that this is how he met Jose.
Differences[edit | edit source]
There's not many differences between the version of the story told in Minion. Partially because Rider doesn't go into much detail. The biggest change is when he claims that Tara used to ride on the back of his Harley, despite this only being the case for 3 days in Make it Last Forever.
